Are you sure it's the trailer and not the tow vehicle ?? before you start ??

Re: trailer wiring

yea i just got that boat a few weeks ago and the boat i had before it worked fine. i will try grounding everything but the problem with that is, i only really know how to run the wires from the tongue to the lights and then hook them up so im hoping that is right and i will look in that link to see...i dont really know how i would ground everything when they only have the 2 wires sticking out the back.

Re: trailer wiring

looking from the back of the trailer yellow and yellow/brown go down the left side of the trailer, greens go right side. the solid colors are the brake and turn signal wire, the browns are the tail lights at night. buy some extra wire, and fasten it to the bolts that mount the lights, and then connect it to the white wire on the plug. clear as mud?? i use connectors like this, to splice the wire.

TD, do you use the grease filled connectors? I have had problems in the past with the plain automotive style connectors.

Re: trailer wiring

Going from 5 at the vehicle to 4 in the trailer has another possibility for a new and untried setup.
If the trailer plug has the flat 4 connector, then it's
probablly designed for the turn signals being the power for the brake lights.
Most newer vehicles have a separate wire for the brake lights, and that wire
is independent from the turn signal wires.

You may need to see if that is your predicament, and if it is, then you might
need a tail light adapter, costing about $28, which has what appears to be
a heavy duty flat 4 plug. It actually has some electrical circuitry in it. It takes
the 5 wires into it, being the brake light wire, right turn, left turn, parking lights, and ground wire.
The output from that plug results in the flat four
plug from the vehicle, being the right turn, left turn, parkings lights, and ground wire.
The color coding of yellow, brown, and green is pretty much standardized,
although it's best to use a tester to be sure. Someone could have changed
something. The tail light adapter kit I bought included a mini tester that
really worked, and that was a good thing because my van manual did not
list all the right color codes. Nightmare manual. Good luck, you can do it!

Re: trailer wiring

If you use your trailer in salt water, do not use the splices that Tashadaddy posted. Any splices need to be waterproof and you will not have waterproof splices with those types. The best way is soldering and heatshrink tubing that includes a sealant.

If you have good clean grounds at all of your trailer lights, there is no need to run an extra ground wire.

Re: trailer wiring

Use marine shrink butt splice fittings that you can buy at any marine store and put a little dielectric grease in them first. You can get it at any marine or auto parts store. Go ahead and put some on your bulbs too.

As for running a separate ground to each light can't hurt, kind of wondering why I didn't do that.

Re: trailer wiring

Somebody on here recommended liquid electrical tape. I tried it and I love it. Fills in all my gaps and everything!
