Trailer wires

My trailer has 5 wires going to a 4 pin plug (white, green, brown, yellow, and a black one. It's a 2000 Stratos trailer that has not been tampered with. My new vehicle wired at the dealer with a manufacturer harness has only 4 wires to a 4 pin plug (no black). Everything works except that the left turn signal blinks on the right side of the trailer and the right blinks on the left side, and the left brake light is a little dimmer than the right. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Trailer wires

Here is a guess. The fifth wire is for backing up, activates the lock out on a surge brake system.

Check the wiring carefully, I think somebody crossed some lines up.

Re: Trailer wires

Use a test light or voltmeter to check the terminals on the tow vehicle. They are left turn, right turn, tail and ground respectively on a flat plug. I suspect the electrically challenged individual at the dealership reversed the left and right turn signal wires. If the tow vehicle checks out, the problem is in the trailer. Very often a filament in a dual filament bulb will burn out but drop across the other one which can create some weird effects. If the white wire at the trailer is not grounded well, a similar result can happen. Third, people very often replace 1034 or 1157 bulbs and force them into the socket even though the bulb and socket are keyed to prevent incorrect insertion. This also creates weird effects.
