hey guys, I am going to replace the hand winch on my trailer in the next few days and I am looking for a bit of advice.

The boat is an 89 baretta 20' with aprox weight of 2650. In my search for a new winch, max loads of 2000lbs plus are not common. Since the boat is lighter in water do i not need a winch that will hold the total boat weight dry? if that is the case, what about when it is on the trailer out of water, will there be a problem?

thanks

Re: trailer winch

You're Sliding, or rolling the boat up the Trailer,......
Not trying to Lift the Whole Boat......

1000lb. or 1500lbs is PLENTY........

Re: trailer winch

Don't overlook the gear ratio of the winch. A 1000# winch may not a low enough gear ratio to easily tug the boat onto a trailer at a shallow ramp. If you compare two winches -- say both are 1500# and one has a 100:1 ratio and the other has 150:1 - take the 150:1 as it provides an easier pull although it retrieves less line with each rotation.

1500 should work just fine. Make sure your bunk boards and or rollers are in good shape I re-did my when I put a new winch on and can pull the boat on so smooth now I should have done it years ago. :)

Re: trailer winch

I just reworked my trailer and installed those plastic caps on the bunks. Like day and night. With the lakes low here there isn't much water to float the boat and you have to drag it most of the way.

Agree with the larger winch as part of the (my) job was to install a heavier winch. Course the ones with a gear reducer (and direct drive) are real slow (proportionally) in the reduction position; course they pull easily there. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Mark

Actually you can have your cake and eat it to when it comes to the winches. They make ones that you can "shift" gears. Faster retrieve when the boat is floating more and then you can shift it to a lower gear ratio for heavier pulling.
