A strap winch is fine for that size boat and eventually will not leave steel splinters in your fingers like a cable. A 1000# winch would certainly be sufficient.

Belt or rope is a personal choice. I've had both, stayed with the belt. It's less trouble to keep it even on the drum, and is rated at many thousands of pounds. Either way, if it's stored outside, keep a plastic bag or other covering over it, sunlight UV will age it fast.

The higher rated winches are a higher ratio crank to drum, makes it easier to turn but takes more turns for a given length of rope/strap.

I bought a 1300 lbs for my 14ft runabout and it works great. I went through to other less expensive brands that were both wire and really didn't do the job. I would go with one with a belt and the one I bought was from Sportsman Warehouse.

Strap or line. No cable. When it stays there for too many years, there ain't no unkinking it. 600 pounds will be more than enough for that boat. I have dry loaded boats well up into the 800s with a 600 pound, and it ain't a problem whatsoever.

I gather your in AU The Jarrett 5:1s at super cheap auto are rated to about 800kg I think, should be plenty, bias and whitworths have some good ones as well.

The one you have would be a 3:1, you'll be able to tell by watching the small gear where the handle is, it'll turns three times for every one turn of the big main one. the new one will have the ratio printed on it, sounds like you need a 5:1 providing it will fit on your trailer, Jarrett are a good brand or the alco ones at bias. I've got a two speed 5:1 1:1 so while the boats still in the water I use the 1:1 and when it gets up on the trailer I use 5:1. my boats 4.3m. jarrett and alco make both straight 5:1 and two speed 5:1 1:1
