I have a Fulton T-something 2600# winch on my trailer. It's rusty and looks like crap. I am going to replace it. I need to make sure my math is correct before I order.

Boat- 3400 lbs dry

Fuel- 350-400 lbs

Stuff- 150 lbs

Lets call it 4000 lbs just incase. I have heard the standard is 35% of gross weight, I'm choosing to go 50% gross weight with a 2000 lb winch.

Is my math and figuring standard correct?

Also...

Cable or nylon strap?

It's a EZ Loader roller trailer.

Thanks Y'all.

Your math is correct. Boat, fuel, gear, etc divided by two = target winch capacity, according to Fulton's guidelines. Strap vs cable is a preference thing, but straps don't bind up in the winch, and are often rated for more weight than cables.

Straps don't stick you when the strands break.

Stick with a Fulton winch. At the very least, stay away from SeaSense. They're also sold under house brand names like Bass Pro and others. I replaced my winch with a Fulton F2. Pricy, but commensurate quality, in my opinion.

I went with a Fulton F2 2k also. I found it for 105 and free shipping, then had a 20% off coupon. I just have to wait on it to get here like everything else. LOL

Re: Trailer winch question.

I upgraded to the Fulton F2 - 3200#.
It is a two speed. 5:1 Normal Gearing, and 16:1 for when the going gets tough!
It is way overkill for a 3500# boat, but it makes winching so easy that the Admiral can crank it right up to the Bow Stop with one hand!

I found it on ebay, Brand New, in a very Distressed Box for $75 delivered. Just Lucky I guess!
