Trailer winch jammed.

The winch on my RollerCoaster trailer is jammed and on inspection all I can see is that a tooth on one of the cogs is completely missing. I can rotate the handle about one to one and a half turns before it jams so I don't believe it is the broken tooth on it's own. Thinking I might just get a new winch anyway but does the weight rating of the winch have to match the weight of the boat. If so approximately how much would a 20 foot cuddy with a V6 engine weigh.

Re: Trailer winch jammed.

My 20' Cuddy with a V8 weighed around 2500 lbs so figure about that for yours. You can use any winch you want as you're not lifting near what the winch can handle, but the bigger the better in most cases. I have found that a good winch that will handle a boat your size has teeth on each side of the spool and a two-speed capability. Figure about $80 US although winches as cheap as $30 will do the job.

They're not worth messing with- get a new one and bolt it on.

UFM82

I would think you should look more at about 3000 for weight with fuel, cooler, anchor, etc.

In any event I suspect the cost difference is pretty small to get one that has some nice headroom

Re: Trailer winch jammed.

Once you know the weight of your boat "wet" (fuel, and other equipment included), a rule of thumb I've read on a manufacturer's web site is 50% of that weight - then adjust up or down depending on your expected loading scenarios. Less capacity needed for roller trailers on shallow slope ramps, more capacity needed for bunk trailers and steep ramps, etc.

The other consideration is do you want a two speed winch? In general (there are exceptions), you're getting into a 2000 lb. capacity in a two speed winch. Except for mounting size and a truely negligable cost difference, I can't think of any reason not to size your winch heavier than you need. Size is a factor because the footprint of the larger winches might be larger than the space available on your winch post.

The Iboats mega mall probably has what you need. dutton-lainson seems to be one of the major manufacturers and their website has a lot of good technical information which you could use to decide. This includes line drawings and dimensions of their winches, which is most likely similar to same-capacity winches of other manufacturers.

Re: Trailer winch jammed.

Read your current winch carefully (might need to clean off rust to see it clearly.) There's likely a weight rating stamped right on it. Match or exceed that number with your replacement and you'll be matching or exceeding the original.
