I have an EZLoad trailer (tandom) for my 21' boat. The winch has a removable handle (push spring held locking plate and it comes off..no screw/nut). Last trip to lake...it fell off somewhere along the way (makes for an interesting load). I don't know brand of winch so...I am having difficulty locating a replacement handle. Anybody have any ideas what brand it may be or where to look? All replacement handles I have located require them to secured with a nut.

-JustMrWill

Most winch handles have slotted mounting holes that fit over a shaft that has flat surfaces on opposite sides. You can modify the winch shaft by cutting off any existing mounting parts, grinding the flats onto the shaft, and then drilling and tapping the shaft for a bolt and washer to hold the handle on. Otherwise, a welding shop would weld any handle onto the shaft in less than 5 minutes and it would never again fall off.

Thanks for the suggestion. The only "problem" with the welding idea...this is a 2 speed set up...where you move the handle to whichever gear ration you want....probably why they designed the handle with the "quick release" feature instead of bolting it on.

-JustMrWill

You'll just have to pick first or second gear before you weld it.

Actually not. Have them weld a stub onto each shaft. Then have a mating stub welded to the handle. Slip the handle on either stub to operate it. Add a hitch pin to secure it to either shaft. Just takes a little creative engineering.

Do you (should say 'Did you?)leave the handle on the winch with the trailer when you're on the water?

Lesson for all of us is to keep any potentially loseable bits in the boat - or vehicle.

Nope...lost it on ride to ramp...went over construction (grated asphalt) and it must have wiggled/sook off. From now own..it wil be removed while moving and left in truck while boat is on water.

-JustMrWill
