I have a chance to get a trailer for a great price but want to make sure I can register it without a problem. I live in Ma. And here you need a title for any trailer. The owner says he never registered it (thus no title) but has all the original paperwork from the dealer (he is the original owner). Could this be a problem?

Re: Trailer title?

Don't know your state exactly, but sounds like same rules here in MO

I just got a boat/trailer from KY, KY doesn't title trailers. I need a very descriptive bill of sale from the seller. They will then title (and give me a vin I believe)

It can be done.

Re: Trailer title?

Here in Indiana, when I bought my boat/trailer it was the trailer that needed the title.
I think the steps involved were a police/vin# check, then a completed bill of sale(notorized??), then a trip to the DMV.

However, when I had my first police check on the trailer, it no longer had a vin anywhere. So I had to go to the DMV register it as a homemade trailer, get a new vin issued(mailed)by the DMV, re-vin the trailer, another police check, then back to the DMV.
Pain in the boat, but since this was my first boat I felt it was worth it....
Easiest thing to do is call your DMV. Sometimes they may even be helpful (but don't count on it) :p

Re: Trailer title?

In Texas trailers are registered, not titled, but you must present proof of ownership (previous registration and bill of sale) to register it and get tags.

Outboard engines, however, are titled in Texas. You must present a clear title, signed off as a bill of sale, to get title. You must also show that the engine is the one shown on the title by presenting a pencil rubbing of the model plate. If the model/serial number plate is missing you are out of luck.

If the number plate is missing it is presumed stolen and you must present documented history since the engine was originally sold new. Or you don't get title.

Finally, it is illegal to sell an outboard in Texas without presenting clear title to the buyer.

Don't know about MA law, B.Gagnon, but in Texas traffic in stolen property is VERY hazardous.

Call your sec. of state (if that's what you call them in MA) I usually call my local SOS when I have questions and they are very helpful, especially(sp?) if they aren't busy.

DougV>

Re: Trailer title?

Not to start an argument but Ky does title trailers. I have two trailers with titles. They just don't issue license plates. But if you get pulled over you better have a registration and you need a title to obtain that.
