Trailer Tires

I recently bought a '71 Holsclaw trailer....the tires had good tread but also have dry rot. Can you purchase tire not on rims for trailers? I have only seen them on rims in places like West Marine.<br /><br />Thanks

Yes, FBT, you can buy trailer tires without buying new rims.<br /><br />Most tire dealers can get them for you. Don't let them talk you into auto tires, use trailer tires of the correct load rating only.<br /><br />Good luck.

Check them rims out good...they can rust out and have a nut/bolt pull through. Load rating "d" or better. Make sure the new tires match the weight of the load they are carrying.

Just finnished putting on a new set of Goodyear Marathons today. The old tires only had about 3000 miles on them but they were 14 years old and were so cracked, they had to go. The rims are galvinized and had no rust, so I just needed rubber only. The original tires were bias ply Gooyears F78-15 which I had crossed over to Marathon Radials 225/75/15 "D" load range. I will also use tire skirts to protect my new tires from the sun.<br /><br />What started out as getting new tires turned out to be 2 seals + 2 inner & outer bearings and races. Just a reminder that when your tires are off the trailer, give the drum a couple of turns.<br />If you here any bearing noise, now is the time to fix it, not on the highway.<br /><br />Mike.

If those rims are plain rims like most boat trailers have on then then they are probably pretty rusty. Rims with tires already on them aren't much more expensive than just the tires and unless you are planning on mounting them yourself, they're probably just as cheep at the local Wally World. On my trailers when the tires need replacing I just replace the whole works and keep one of the better wheels for a spare.

Does Walmart carry the larger size trailer tires?<br /><br />I have E78X14's (ST 195 75 14) and I have a F78X14 (ST 205 75 14) spare.<br /><br />I couldn't find the E78 with the rim anymore. So I just got an F78 as a spare.<br /><br />My tires that are on there now are getting dry rotted so its time for a change.

The Wal Mart near me started stocking 13" & 14" trailer tires a few weeks ago. Last year when I asked about sizes they don't stock They pulled out a book that had just about any size trailer tire you could think of. Just make sure you know the exact size and load rating you want because they really aren't too knowledgable about trailer tires.

Well, I don't know if I'm allowed to say this or not, but I found the best deal on trailer tires on Ebay, from discounttires.com.(Spelling?) I got both tires, w/out rims, and free UPS shipping for just a little more than the cost of one tire locally. I priced the 480x12 tires locally and could not beat $30/tire at Walmart, Academy, Boaters World,etc.....<br /><br />Just my $.02

I hate to butt in, but I have a question. If the load rating is adequate, why not use car tires? The 5.30X12s I have and the 155R12s I'm looking at both have approx a 850lb load rating. The radials are slightly wider and slighty taller. They have a flatter profile and would put a lot more rubber on the road. The Carlisles look almost like wheelbarrow tires in comparison. What other differences should be considered?

I have to agree with BillP.<br /><br />Just put new Marathon 225X15 radials on my single axle trailer, which is maxed out to its 3500 lb limit.<br /><br />Then got on I-95 and hit an area with a slight swerve. Looked in the mirror and saw the trailer going left-to-right like an old sound meter.<br /><br />Very scary. Have to limit speed to 60 or less. Now have to figure out what to do next. The previous bias-ply tires got exremely hot, so the radials were the solution for that. Now I have cool tires and dangerous sway.<br />May have to add another axle.

I would look to www.overtons.com. They have white spoke wheels with Goodyear Marathons mounted for about $115 each.<br /><br /> http://www.overtons.com/cgi-bin/overtons/order/pdetail.cgi?35107++2AN10 <br /><br />The tire alone at a tire shop is about $85 to $100.
