I have a single axle trailer, boat weighs about 2,000 lbs. Right now I have 2 bias ply f7814's by BF Goodrich that need replacement. Should I switch over to radials & what are the differences between radials & bias ply as far as trailering? I haven't had any problems with the tires I have now, but there over 10 yrs. old & i don't trust them any longer. Can anyone recommend a good tire?

Sea Wolf:

From my understanding, the biggest difference between bias ply and radials is radials generate less heat (and due to this less wear) and radials are supposed to have longer mileage. All ST tires are supposed to have increased strength in their sidewalls. I've also read bias ply are better for tandems but this does not apply to you.

There's much info on tire brands that can be found on this web site but also check the camper bulletin boards. I've found just as much and maybe more concerning trailer/camper tires on those web sites.

If you are unsure what to buy I'd call the trailer company that builds your trailer and see what they suggest. Good luck!

Steve

Since yours are 10 years old, they still hold air, and you haven't had any problems with them, I'd try to find new ones just like 'em.

This forum is filled with horror stories about other brands.

The tires hold air very well. As a matter of fact I only had to add a few lbs. after the trailer sat all winter. The reason I think I need new ones is there are some cracks in the sidewalls.

That's called 'ozone degradation'. Definetely time for replacement.

Aldo

Well,I guess I'm stuck with Carlisle's. I can't find a tire dealer in my area that sells anything but. I don't want to order tires online, so I guess I'm out of luck. BF Goodrich, Firestone, Cooper don't make trailer tires any longer.

Get the most ply tire they have and keep max air in them. Shade the tires from the sun when stored. Good luck, I have Carlisle's too :p

Sea wolf, I have Cooper's and like them, only had them 1 year and not many miles so I can't provide any long term info. According to the cooper website the still make trailer tires. Made in the USA too. I would do whatever it takes to get something besides Carisle.

KM

I found a dealer that has Towmaster tires. Anyone have an opinion on these?
