I am new to boating and have a trailer that needs some repair. The tires at h78/15 (4). One of them blew and I can't find the same type of tire,so I got a used one as close to the original as possible. The originals look diffrent. Are they specailly made for weight or can regular car tires work? The other ones are pretty cracked and I would like to get those new as well

Re: TRAILER TIRE QUESTIONS

Trailer tires are special tires designed especially tough for trailer duty.
Never use a car or truck tire in place of a trailer tire.

That size tire with that rating means it is a bias ply. I just had that exact tire size crossed over to radial trailer tires and that is 225/75/15 load range "D". It is important to double check your load rating and the tire dealer will do that for you.
I put Goodyear Marathon's on my trailer but check with your local dealer. Do not buy older used trailer tires because the dry rot may not be too visable until after they are inflated on your rims.
If you replace your tires, you may want to consider putting rv tire covers over your tires if they are sitting outside in the drive way. These covers stop the UV damage from the sun that causes the rubber to crack before its time and you just pull them off before each trip.

Hope this helps,
Mike.

Re: TRAILER TIRE QUESTIONS

Josepr
I agree with mike. I also like the radial tires but if go with the radial need to make sure and replace both tires on that axel at the same time. I am supprised mike tire size did not have a R in it. Like 225/70/R15 load range D. Load range D I think gets 50 pounds of air also. You must have a big heavy boat.

Re: TRAILER TIRE QUESTIONS

Good catch Boatist, You are correct.
I forgot the "R" which denotes Radial and yes you should try to keep tires the same on both sides of the axle if you switch one from Bias Ply to radials.

My tire is rated for 65 psi for max load. I run at 60 for now and will check the wear to see if it is a good pressure. My boat isn't too big, but my trialer is only a single axle so I stick to a heavy tire rating to be safe.

Good luck josepr.
Mike
