Hello

I don't know very much about boats or trailers, but my boss asked me to help him research the trailers available for his Monterey 228 Bowrider. I've talked to a few dealers, and they all seem to have their own 3rd party manufacture that they recommend. Here's what we're looking for in a trailer, and if you have any expertise to share, I would very much appreciate your help.

Monterey 228 Bowrider
Length: 21' 6"
Weight: 3800lbs (+ 57 gallon fuel tank)

This boat and its trailer will be eventually be brought to Costa Rica, where the boat will need to be loaded/unloaded into the water without access to slips. Is this possible? The boat will be grounded when not in use, so we're looking for a trailer that is good for easy on/off. Since the trailer will be used around salt water, I've been told that trailers with rollers will rust. Magic Tilt makes a roller trailer that is fully galvanized. Is this what I should look for?

Does a boat this size needs a motorized winch, or is a crank winch sufficient to load the boat onto the trailer?

As far as brands go, can a Monterey boat ride on a different manufacturer's trailer? Is there any downside to this? Is it worth investing in a Monterey brand trailer?

Any help would be appreciated, and the sooner the better. We're looking to buy a trailer by the end of this week.

Thanks for your time
Nathan

the boat can be loaded on a trailer built by hundreds of manufacturers. you need atleast 2 axles rated to carry 5000lbs. Aluminum would be the best metal, trailer must have brakes. you need a bunk trailer. just what do you mean 'without access to slips'?

We aren't sure there will be ramps made specifically for boats everywhere we'd like to unload the boat into water. That is why were looking more towards a roller trailer vs. a bunk trailer.

that's a good point for that. but then i would be concerned with type of tow vehicle, and have the widest tires available, on the trailer. i have launched on unimproved ramps, that were silted in, the trailer being a wedge shape it gets impossible to pull out. had to off load the boat, disconnect tow vehicle, and winch trailer out, and dry load the boat. yes, i wished i had a heavy duty electric winch on the trailer. this was only and 18 foot boat, also have the tilt mechanism would be advantageous.

I think that boat is out of the bad ramp size range it is just to BIG :) with a normal trailer

i'm pretty much in agreement with Tommays. when i had my hobie cat, i had 10 wide tires for beach launching, and it would still be hard to get out.
