I picked up an old army jon boat from an auction. The trailor was homemade by the US government(taxpayers)....anyway it is one of the best and simplest designs i have yet to see.....for a jon anyway. Back to your question on steps .....the step on each side, front and rear of the fender are framed out of angle.....and topped with expanded metal instead of flat plate. Aids in traction and water drains right off..no rsut....great concept i thought.
