Trailer spare tire question

Well, I ended up getting a flat on the way home from fishing the other day. Someone left glass in the street after an accident. Well I went and purchased 2 new tires with wheels 4.8 X 8 and a spare tire U bolt carrier. My boat is a 12 footer and the trailer sits pretty low to the ground. Should I put the spare tire under the bow of the boat, or forward the boat winch on the tongue? I can't put it vertical like they do on big boat trailers because it sits too low....Thanks for any advice in advance......Warren

Warren from Cali,

You mention a couple of good options. How is the tongue weight on your trailer?

If it's a bit on the light side, put the tire assembly just ahead of the winch stand.

If the weight seems to be good, just behind the winch stand and ahead of the boat has always been a favorite place of mine.

I don't think it'll matter that much - it doesn't weigh much - just keep it out of the way.

I have mine mounted flat behind the winch stand kind of under the bow of the boat.

Make sure you keep a tool with you that'll get the lugs off of the U bolt though. The bolts sit way too deep to use a tire iron on mine. I keep a crecent wrench in the back of my truck.

Thanks for the replys, hey, I didn't tighten it up yet but, I have it finger tight on the winch stand. Its U shaped steel. Can I mount it vertically on this? I'm worried about bending it when I tighten it up. I would like to mount it here so that its easy to wash it off when I launch in saltwater (and it looks better there)...What do you guys think? its only an 8 inch tire so it won't take too much tork to hold it there......Warren

Re: Trailer spare tire question

I keep the spare to my smaller boat trailer in the truck. Less likely to be stolen and no worries about the elements or getting in the way...

I placed mine right behind the winch stand. It is very usefull as a step to get in and out of the boat when launching. Just make sure it is tight as it will expand and contract as the air heats up or cools down. Check it often.

Got it....Ended up putting the spare on with a U bolt on the winch stand. All I need now is a bag that will hold a lug wrench and spare wheel bearings....Thanks for the help....Warren

Warren, make sure you use anti-sieze compound on the lug nuts/bolts. Now that you have it you may never need it, at least for a long time. After years of sitting, the anti-sieze will enable you to easily remove them when necessary.
