Is there anything special about a trailer tire rim? I picked up a used boat and trailer and of course they have automotive tires on it. The rims are aluminum, 14" and really pretty cool. This is a tandum trailer that carrries about 6K so I know the tires need to be specialty trailer and at least load rating C.

I would rather be safe than cool. Feedback???

Thanks.

Re: Trailer rims

Trailer rims have a load capacity and also an air pressure rating. You NEED ST or trailer tires. Go to load range D. They don't cost that much more.

jlshields,

Will ST be strong enough? They appear to have a load rating around 1600-1800 lbs...

Re: Trailer rims

Pointer, the ST stands for Special Trailer. They have a little stiffer sidewall. Check me on this but I think load range C is rated at around 2100# each. I carry 7500# on a tandem axle Eagle. Tires now are GoodYear Marathon ST225/75R15 load range D. Air them to the max rated on the tire. They each have a capacity of 2540#. Speaking from experience, 'AVOID CARLISLE TIRES'. Five tires, 2 blowouts, 3 tread seperations.

Re: Trailer rims

jlshields,

I have seen the frustration with the carlisle tire brand and will be avoiding them.

The ST has a load rating of over 1800lbs for the tires I am looking at. That puts me over the top but is the sidewall flex that much greater than trailer tires as they are somewhat tight to the fenders. I just don't want to have shaved sidewalls from the fender wells. ;) I will repost when I have a specific definition of "ST".

Pointer,

The ST tires have stiffer sidewalls and will flex less. I would think you would want that for a tight fit.
