How much heavier should the rating of the trailer be for a light cruiser that is 25' long. The boat weighs in at ~4,500 lbs. I am estimating that fuel will weigh 400 lbs. That takes me up to 4,900 lbs. I would assume that a trailer capable of holding 6,000 lbs would be the correct size that I should be looking for. That gives me 1,000 lbs of gear weight and I am sure that the trailer has a built in safety factor. Am I on the right track with my logic? I am hearing conflicting stories on which weight I should select from manufacturers.

Re: Trailer Rating

Sounds to me like you are taking a good approach, TBB. I like a boat to be around 70%-75% of the trailer rating.

JB has a good point, which I try to take even a bit farther.<br />I try not to go over 75-80% of the tow capacity of whatever you pull the toys with...
