I found a deal on a trailer that is solid, but doesnt seem to have ever been painted and has surface rusr! How do I go about preping it for paint? What is the best way to remove rust? Will be used in fresh water only. I like the idea of using truck liner non skid paint or deck non skid paint.
Thank You!

To really remove it you have to take it apart. Completely. Then, your choice - sand or sand blast it. Remember that if it has a tubular frame it may be rusted on the inside also. There's now way to get rid of this and it could be rusting seriously on the inside which could compromise its strength.

If you go to an automotive paint supplier they may be able to help with preparation advice and paint and primer selection. Another place to ask would be a farmer's supply store that carries tractor and farm implement parts and supplies.

Delta, it will be hard to fix any rust on the interior of the frame. If the trailer has been only in fresh water, the rust is likely not too bad. For the exterior rust, wirebursh the loose stuff off, and paint (brush is best) the metal with "Rustoleum Rusty metal Primer". You may apply a top coat if desired.

I cant see in the frame. The rust on the outside is not flaky rust but more rust colored like any unprotected metal will get. I think a little sanding and the rustoleum should do. Thanks for your help guys!
