trailer post extentions

I finally got to take out a recently purchased/older small v-bottom boat (my first) and I'm having a heck of a time seing the bunks (which are under water) when I'm putting the boat back on the trailer.

Aside from adding some post extentions to my boat, (which everyone in the parking lot seems to have and I agree are really cool because you can rig your lights on them too and get them out of the water), does anyone have any ideas for some other kind of way to line myself up correctly. The trailer does have fenders (which have to be under water too in order to get the boat on).

The good thing is... if I'm slightly off the mark, it's light enough (even with motor/cargo) to correct that problem once I'm off the ramp.

Thanks. I guess I could always ask my wife to start working out to make the job of shifting a little easier, but I kinda like her the way she is. :D

You can also get those carpeted guides for the sides. I have posts on my trailer, but it seems to me that the carpeted side bunks may work better. You can order them from Champion Trailer parts or buy them from Northern Equipment, Tractor Supply, West Marine, Overtons just to name a few. Good Luck

Thanks Stormy! That'll probably work better than the posts.

What if one just wanted to, you know...extend the rollers already on there? Seems like it would be easier/cheaper.

frosteeone:
I know this is a old post, but if you haven't already done so, go with what Storm said: Carpeted side bunks.. after you have the boat on the trailer where you want it, bolt them on with about a 1/4 clearance on each side. Mine has been like that for 13 years and my boat can only go on one way... the right way every time!

Luck to ya
Link

Frostone...
I'm also in st. louis area... O'fallon...

Take a look at what I added to the back of my trailer. I used some VERY heavty angle iron and made bunks out of 2x6. It doesn't matter what angle I aproach the trailer at now... just line up and winch on.
if your around o'fallon, you can swing by and take a look if ya want...

Thanks link.

Used 2"x3" 1/4" angle iron Quite beefy... anything else would probably bend if loading in the current of the river.

took about 5 hours total with 2 of us to put it on. a lot of grinding and cutting... wish I had a plasma cutter! Put the mig to work on that job.
