trailer lights

I'm having a problem with my trailer lights as follows: tailights and signal lights work fine with vehicle lights on or off. The problem is that when the brake is applied only the left brake light works. The right light seems to dim slightly with the lights on. I've put a new bulb in the right light-same thing. I've used a test light to check connections at the vehicle and all seems to be correct there. I've considered re-wiring the trailer but would prefer not to if I'm missing something simple. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks

It does have a converter...I've thought about replacing it to see...will do so if grounding isn't the problem. Thanks

Re: trailer lights

Make sure the bulb you replaced is in the correct way. I've seen so many 1034 and 1157 bulbs installed 180 degrees out. Look at the bulb from the side and you'll see that the two little pins are offset from each other. This is to prevent incorrect insertion. However, the lamp sockets are made so sloppy the bulb can be forced in wrong and as a result all sorts of weird indications pop up. If those are ok, make sure the ground is good at all lights and between the trailer and tow vehicle. Then the converter needs to be checked/replaced.
