I am wanting to change out my trailer lights to LED lights and I am wondering if some of you have any suggestions as to cheap as far as cost not in quality, LED lights.

Also I have surge brakes on my trailer. Can I do any maintenance on the brake system or do I need to just take it to my dealer for a yearly checkup?

have not used led yet but if you search here there are some problems with them leaking as well as how people like them

the surge brakes are pretty simple if you have ever worked on a car drum brake

the biggest problem is the wheel cylinder sticking causeing brake drag

i boat in saltwater so yearly take apart and clean and lube is a must

http://www.easternmarine.com/em_showroom/tech_articles.html

some good reading about trailers

tommays

I put LED lights on my utilty trailer, they were about $27 each plus tax, the ones I got have 12 LED's, the one with less may be cheaper.
They are a lot more visible that bulb type, well worth the money.
I will be putting them on my two boat trailer soon.

E-bay. I got the same lights being sold at most of the marine stores and BPS for $60 a pair for $35 with shipping included.

Bass Pro Shops has a complete set for about $60.00. You may also need clearance lights and the center bar if you have a wide trailer. Mine are in their third season with no problems.

As for the brakes, if you normally make minor repairs to your vehicles and mechanical things around the house and have the tools and location to do the work, you can do it yourself. I do.

Mine have only been on for a few weeks, I think they're great - brighter and more eye-catching than regular bulbed units.

I got a nice set including the licence plate illuminator, two side markers, brackets and complete wiring harness for $60 CDN at Princess Auto (don't know if they exist in the USA), then saw another set for only $30 next time I went. The second set wasn't as nice and no side markers or licence plate light. The cases aren't water-tight but the light elements themselves are encased in epoxy so they're perfect.
