Im on my second boat this season (17' v hull on a bunk roller trailer)...the last boat (17' v hull on a bunk trailer) i used a LIGHT BAR to keep the lights out of the salt water. It was a pain in the butt to be honest, and by NOT having my plate attached directly to the trailer, It got me a ticket.... I got rid of the light bar with the last boa tso Im starting fresh.

Im thinking about a light system thats out of the water and maybe incorporate them with a guide bar system. It looks simple to me, but Im wondering if there are any tricks to it and if what I see used is simple PVC at the guide poles?

Re: Trailer light set up

I am pretty sure they sell kits for this. I made mine out of 1/2" EMT and then covered it with 3/4" PVC. I wanted and most likely should have used 3/4 or 1" EMT and a slightly bigger PVC but I only own a 1/2" bender.

You can also fabricate something from the 1-1/2" slotted angle iron sold at the BORG.

Re: Trailer light set up

I'm wondering why go to all that trouble?

If you use a good set of submersible trailer lights (I'd use LED), solder and shrink wrap (with dielectric grease) all the connections, and run the ground all the way back to the front plug (don't use the trailer for a ground) you will have many years of trouble free use.

As for the plate. Weld on a a couple tabs to bolt it to and keep them clean and painted every year. If you use holes in the frame to attach it, you can have some rust issues.
