trailer light problem

Any help offered here would be appreciated, as I’m stumped. I've used the search function with little help. I am refurbishing an old trailer. I bought 2 new tail/brake lights – the cheap ones with one bulb and 2 filaments. I am using the typical 4-conductor flat trailer connector. The wiring is as follows – one for ground, one for tail (left and right), one for left turn signal/brake, and one for right turn signal/brake. I have cleaned all paint off surface where ground wire bolts to trailer chassis. The tow vehicle is a ’88 Ford Ranger. Here’s the problem I’m having.

When I actuate the left or right turn signal, all is well. When I actuate the brakes, all is well. When I turn on the headlights or parking lights, all is well. With the headlights or parking lights on, if I actuate the turn signal in either direction, it flashes correctly. But the taillight on the opposite also flashes, although faintly. I ran an additional ground with jumper cables and no help.

To further confuse, I completely disconnected the trailer and repeated the above scenario on just the truck. I noticed the taillight on the opposite side of the blinking light was blinking ever so faintly. This indicates the problem is maybe not with the trailer, but with the truck. All tests were conducted on battery power. I didn’t start the engine.

Re: trailer light problem

Could be the trucks flasher unit is faulty. It seems the trailer is functioning and grounded corectly.

And the problem is on the truck, not the trailer, since the truck displays the symptom without the trailer attached. Your trailer will do exactly what the truck is doing.

In my opinion, the flasher voltage is somehow bleeding through the brake circuit. Flashers are independent, brake is common to both sides. That's what it sounds like to me.

I had the same problem but only when trailer hooked up. Rewired trailer and still had problem(needed to be done anyway). Next went to car tailer wiring and found the problem, I had used connectors with solder
inside that just had to be heated up, the solder let
go. Soldered all the connections properly and have not had a problem since.

Bondo hit it right on. Most likey a bad ground, even in the truck. You see running lights slightly blinking cause it dims when you apply the brakes or turn signals, cause it is shorting to ground somewhere.

I have seen this many times troubleshooting other folks vehicles and trailers. Most of the time it was in the rear tail light assembly. Water in the fixture or corrosion causes this too.

Re: trailer light problem

You definitely have a bad ground. If you want to check the trailer just get a separate piece of wire and go from either mounting post to good clean steel on the trailer and test lights. When you find the bad one just attache your new ground to a clean bolt on the trailer. If the bad ground is on your tow vehicle just clean it good with a wire brush and sandpaper and replace. When I rewired my trailer I ran all the wires in 1/2" PVC pipe and put my lights up on the guide posts to keep them out of the water. The PVC keeps the wires from rubbing and shorting out.

Re: trailer light problem

I had similar problem too but when the parking/running light is on only the left turn signal would blink properly. The right turn signal stay solid and the left blink lightly. Everyone told me I have a bad ground and told me to redo the ground connection. I redo the ground a bunch of times, checked them and got perfect connectivity everytime but still got a problem. I bought the boat used and when I took a closer look at the trailer frame, the spring, on the right side of frame, was broke and was welded back to the trailer frame sometime ago. I pulled the wire out and it turned out the wires was melted together caused by the heat from the welding torch. The ground and running light was fused together so I essentially did have a ground problem that couldn't be find with an ohm meter. The point is trailer light problem could be something that you would never thought might be the problem and it could be very simple to fix that make you goes DUHH!
