Trailer Light Problem

I have a 2003 Toyota 4-Runner with a 6-pin connection for trailer lights. It came with a converter for a standard 4-pin connection. Has anyone had problems with using this kind of adaptor? After purchasing a new light kit and wiring them according to the diagram, they don't come on at all. It should be simple enough, but I'm totally at a loss.

Make sure all lights are grounded to trailer, and the trailer is grounded to to tow vehicle, with a ground wire. Don't rely on the hitch to be your ground.

Let me add here to also check and make sure you are getting juice at the trucks connector.

Also like roscoe said, make sure you are grounded good at both ends, where the lights bolt on and at the connector.

Should be a white wire to ground so make sure it is grounded at the truck.

Re: Trailer Light Problem

Thanks alot for the advice guys. I know the juice is coming from the adaptor ok, I bought a simple tester and tested the converter. I've grounded the white wire coming out of the 4-pin connector to the truck. Where I'm confused is how to ground the lights. I have two wires coming from each rear light. Driver side has yellow for turn/stop, and brown for light. Passenger has green and brown for same. Do I need to ground each light separately to the trailer? If so, where do I splice in a ground?

Re: Trailer Light Problem

The studs coming out the back of the lights will make the ground. If you aren't mounting to metal brackets mounted to the trailer run a wire from one of the studs to the trailer. A bad ground is the most common light problem on trailers.

Bubba is right! The trailer light studs have to be connected to the trailer frame some how to make the circut work.

Ranger
