Trailer light problem

I just bought a 1986 SeaRay Seville 19 cuddy from a buddy of mine. It came with a brand new tandem axle trailer with some very cool LED lights. No problem so far.

The problem came when I tried to hook it up to my Ford truck. My truck has a factory installed light plug that works fine on my other trailers. The boat trailer works fine when connected to my buddy's Dodge truck. When I plug the trailer in to my Ford, no lights. When I pull out the headlight switch, it pops a fuse every time.

I'm confused. I figured trailer lighting was pretty standard. I have a flat four plug and everything looks clean and neat. Any suggestions? I want to go to the lake today!! Thanks.

It should be standard, it sounds like your buddy and the trailer are different from standard but the same as each other and thus why they work. If yours is factory installed I would assume that's the proper way. So you'll have to trace and debug probably. At least you can go to the lake. We still have snow on the ground up here and ice on the river :(

It's funny how well the words "trailer," "light" and "problem" go together! :D

Are you sure your ground wire is connected properly? And the fuse in your truck -- it's the proper impedance?

Worst comes to worst, just take it to a trailer place and have them rewire it and check it with your truck. Shouldn't cost too much, and it will work.

Just remember to disconnect your trailer lights before you dip the trailer into the water.

Thanks guys. Yeah, everything on my truck is right. Right fuses, good ground. All stock. Works great on the other trailers. I'll try to do some tracing today and if I don't have any luck I guess I'll take it in to have someone look at it that knows what they are doing! haha

Songman,
Let me know what you find. I've got a Ford Ranger that works great with all trailers, except for my snowmobile trailer. It'll run the turn signals fine but blow a fuse when I turn on the running lights. I assume that it's a bad ground somewhere, but I've tested the heck out of it and everything checks out. It also works on every other non-Ford vehicle.
