I was on my way to go sking last saturday and I had a hub blow up on the freeway! major bummer! No one or any thing (but the hub) was hurt! The ouside casing of the hub split down the side... made for a very exciting day!
Anyway, I was installing the new hub it and was wondering what the nut should be torqued to?
Its a 78 Shoreline trailer with a 2500lbs boat on it. No brakes.
any thoughts will be appreciated!

wes

NO!! Just jack the wheel/hub off the ground and tighten the hub nut until you feel resistance when turning the hub it should be tight but turning freely without any play. Then attach the nut holder or cotter pin depending on the configuration. (If you torque it it will overlaod the bearings) If you had one hub blow out I would strongly suggest thet you inspect the other hub and bearings too.

I repack my bearings every season and use bearing buddies and give them a shot or two of grease as needed. Between the water exposure, the wieght of the boat and distanced towed they take a beating.

Bob

Re: trailer hub nut torque setting?

Thanks for the info and advice Bob!

And yes, I am doing both hubs with new bearings and packing them well. the trailer has the bearing buddys as well and i was wondering, it looks like the bearing buddy will only help the outside bearing? is this correct?
Or do you pack the empty space between the inner and outer bearing with grease to allow the bearing buddy to work on both?

just thinking out loud...
Any thoughts?

wes

All the excess space between the bearings will eventually fill with grease. The seal on the inside hub will hold the grease in if it is still good. I usually replace the seals too. The bearing buddy spring is the tell tail device to if it is in need of grease.

Bob
