trailer hub issue

I am refurbishing an old (year unknown) Holsclaw trailer that came with my '59 Starcraft (both for free). The final project is to deal with the wheels. When I removed the wheels to inspect the bearings I noticed that there was no washer between the axle nut and bearing on either hub. So, I replaced the 1" bearings and but on a washer then the nut...NO ROOM FOR THE COTTER PIN!!!!!!!!

Is this OK to not have a washer? Did I not propoerly seat the bearings?

Now--the spindle measures at 4 1/16" from the inner seal seat to the end. The hub measures 4" through center. Do these measurements seem to be OK? If I go to a short 3.5" hub will that leave too much spindle? Could it be as simple as changing the axle nut?

I guess I'm at a loss as what to do---new hubs? New axle with same hubs? I'm not comfortable running the rig with no washers.

Are the races seated all the way in the hub? Is there any play in the hub when it's on the axle?

spots

CN Spots: To the best of my knowledge I have the races seated all the way. When I install the hub I can tighten the nut all the way to the outer bearing surface so that the bearing does not turn but the hub will....no wobble either.

My mechanic neighbor has me freaked about this. I will be taking the trailer on some long runs (NY to Canada) at high speeds so I want to be 100% sure the hub and spindle are properly matched.

Does the spindle have a groove in it to accept the tang normally found on a spindle washer? If not, it likely does not need the washer. If it has the groove a washer should be installed. Depending on how much space you need to gain, you can either grind the back side of the spindle nut or look for one that has less space between the bearing side and the bottom of the notches in the nut. You apparently don't need much since the washer thickness made it a "no-go" situation. For bearing adjustment, tighten the nut with a wrench or socket. Then loosen it and run it back finger tight. Insert the cotter pin. Tapered roller bearings do not require, nor should they have a tight pre-load.

Re: trailer hub issue

I just restored a utility trailer and purchased new hubs from Northern. They were assembled and pre-packed from the factory and there was not a washer. I would have worried but, the old hubs that I tossed also did not have the washer. Considering the age of your rig it has lasted this long... don't sweat it.

I did install bearing buddies and I usually give them a shot or two before a long trip.

Bob

I have 1000lb load cap. Utility Trailer, bought it new, and no washers either, many miles and never a problem.
