i know this has nothing to do with boats or baot trailer.....but this is the best spot to get info..

i have a 7' x 18' CAR hauling trailer with brakes on rear axle..they are electric brake (???).. i have a flat 4 connector on my 88 Bronco F/S 4WD; trailer has a flat 4 wire connector with 2 greens 2 yellows 1 brown, and 1 red 1 black wire (not connected to any yet).

QUESTION:
what is each wire for??
how to wire up trailer side and vehicle side with same 7 pin plug?

Re: Trailer Brakes!!! HELP!!!

How do you have 2 greens, 2 yellows and a brown from a 4 pin connector, Pooly?? That is 5, and you didn't mention the white that should be there.

Here is standard wiring:
Green: Right turn and brake.
Yellow: Left turn and brake
Brown: Clearance and taillights.
White: Ground

For a 5 pin, add:
Red: backup lights (reverse disconnect for surge brakes)

For 6 pin, add:
Blue: electric brakes (from controller in truck)

Seven pin is mostly different:

Brown: right turn and brake
Red: left turn and brake
Green: tail and clearance lights
Yellow: Auxiliary (center pin)
White: Ground
Blue: electric brakes (from controller in truck)
Black: Auxiliary +12V/battery charge

Maybe you can select what type you want and get it wired up ffrom that.

Good luck. :)

Re: Trailer Brakes!!! HELP!!!

the two green and yellows are connected in the connector...i guess i just forgot the white...knew what it was..it was strange for me to see also...that was why i asked...

so i need a six pin harness...

i assume i have electric brakes..there is a drum on each wheel of rear axle..there are no other brake parts that i can see and has just a standard 2" ball hitch..

Re: Trailer Brakes!!! HELP!!!

exactly what do i need to install a seven wire plug to control a 18' tandem axle trailer with brakes on the rear axle?? the trailer will towed with either a 88 Ford Full-size Bronco or a 1999 Ford F-150. Both have just a 4-pin flat plug on them..

Re: Trailer Brakes!!! HELP!!!

You need a 7 wire "kit" to wire truck and trailer. Follow the code above, and the directions that will come with the kit.

If you don't have one yet, you will need an electric brake controller. Install it following directions.

OR: Take both to a reliable trailer hitch or trailer dealer and pay them to do the above.

Good luck. :)

That is a coverter plug for us guys who tow toys with and without brakes.

You need a seven pin on the car and the trailer wired properly for the trailer brakes and all lights to work.

I would like to add that while you can get brake controllers for $50 or less, go ahead and spend the extra to get a better one. For $75, I would highly recommend the one I use, a Tekonsha Envoy. It is a snap to set up and works flawlessly.
