trailer brake fluid

I have a shorelander galvanized trailer w/surge brakes. Can someone please tell me what kind of brake fluid (i.e. what DOT type?)should I use to top off master cylinder with when required?

it should just take a standard DOT 3 brake fluid it will usally be stamped on the master cylinder<br /><br /><br />tommays

On my trailer it is stamped to use DOT 3 fluid but then it has two large red stickers on each side of the coulpler that say to use only DOT 5 silicone fluid.<br /><br />Looks like they must have decided to put that in after they made the unit, it wasn't DOT 3 that was in there.<br /><br />I guess they like to confuse people.
