I need to replace the bearings on my trailer. It is a simple single axel trailer w/o any brakes. It seems like a pretty simple and straight-forward job. Are there any pointers or advice that would help me.

Howdy, JM.

Take a set of the old ones with you when you go to get the new ones. That way you KNOW they will fit. :)

Re: Trailer Bearings

I would add a set of grease caps with a grease fitting (Buddy Bearings). If you keep the cups filled with grease you will never have to replace your bearings again. I drown my trailer in salt water and have never needed to replace bearings. Wish I could say the same for brakes.

Yup those bearing buddies are indespensible. I wouldn't be without them. Also, do you really need new bearings at all. Pull the old ones out and clean them well in solvent ( spelled gasoline in my dictionary) and check them. If they aren't showing shadows or any obvious wear just repack them in the palm of your hand, put on the buddies, Get the outer covers too if they aren't included " bras" and reinstall. Just don't make them too tight if you are using the old already broken in bearings, tighten till theres to no wiggle. If you get stuck between a tad binding and a tad loose on the lock pin hole location go with the looser of the two.

Re: Trailer Bearings

Thanks guys:

I ended doing everthing that was said and it worked out well. I bought one set of new bearings and replaced the side that was getting pretty warm when trailering. Repacked both sides, put bearing buddies on, and kept the old ones just as a spare set in case something goes wrong on the road.

Thanks again.

Jason

Re: Trailer Bearings

Hey, while your all on bearings, my trailer (ranger trail) came with "easylube" bearings in which you have to pull the wheel, pop off the hub cover and insert a needle attachment into the center off the hub and pump until you see greese come out from behind the bearing. Can I install the "bearing buddy" style hub cap and let them stick out by removing the wheel center caps? Will the bearings still get lube with this setup?

Re: Trailer Bearings

i'd like to hear some responses to Redneck's question, since I have a similar set up with "shure-lube" on my Karavan trailer.thanks.

Re: Trailer Bearings

I have a 1998 Karavan trailer with the Sure-lube axle and consider it superior to my trailers with Bearing Buddies.

I do not have to remove the wheels, only the rubber outer plug to grease them with a regular zerk gun.

I've had so much trouble with water getting into Bearing Buddies, that I'm buying Sure-Lube axles for those trailers.

Re: Trailer Bearings

thanks Lark40. Good to hear some experienced opinions. I was wrong. I looked at my hubs and obviously don't have to remove wheel, just lube after removing rubber fitting on outside, like you said.
