Re: Trailer Bearings

Piece if cake.
Last time I bought a kit I think it ran about $30-$35 per tire.

Re: Trailer Bearings

Pretty basic mechanics replacing/repacking wheel bearings.

Loosen lug nuts
jack up wheel
remove lug nuts
using a flat screwdriver remove hub center cap
using side dikes or needle nose pliers remove cotter pin
loosen and remove axle nut, (notice it was not real tight)
remove outer wheel bearing
replace axle nut putting it on about 3-5 turns
in a slide hammer type motion pull the hub towards your chest hitting the inner bearing on the axle nut. It should pop out with the wheel seal.
remove axle nut again

pack new bearings with grease
place inner bearing inside race in the inside of the hub.
lightly tap new wheel seal into place
put hub back on axle
put outer wheel bearing in hub
replace washer I for got to tell you to remove ;)
replace axle nut do not over tighten
line up castle nut with hole in axle
put new cotter pin in hole and bend it over the tip of axle
replace center cap ( i recommend using Bearing Buddies)
put wheel back on
hand tighten lug nuts
lower jack
using lug wrench, tighten lug nuts to spec

Did I forget anything?

as long as the spindle and hub are still good.

Re: Trailer Bearings

There is no need to actually replace the bearings if they do not exhibit signs of pitting, broken rollers, or damaged races. But if you do decide to replace the bearings, the races need to be driven out of the hub and replaced as well. Using a new roller bearing on an old race is not recommended. Proper adjustment of the spindle nut is essential.

I was going to say the same. Replace the races also. They usually come with the bearings anyway.

Re: Trailer Bearings

I know this is an old post but i was hoping i could get some answers here with a similar issue. I took my boat out yesterday for the first time in a few months and everything went fine. started backing the bat into the driveway again when i got hom and the tire went side ways. noticed the whole thing was gone (whole thing = bearing i guess?) noticed vibration going up a bridge Im guessing i would have to go through all the steps that were posted except the removal of the bearings.
