Trailer and storage question

I want some opinions on this. I read once that when storing a trailer (with a boat on it) for a long period of time to put the trailer on jack stands or similar to take the weight off the tires. The theory is the tires would become slightly deformed ( out of round) from sitting in the same postion for extended periods of time. Causing the tires to wear out or blow out prematurely. I live in Minnesota and the boat is stored about 5 months a year. A couple of extra minutes to jack up the trailer before putting it away sounds better than a blow out or replacing tires.

I have an 18 ft boat that weighs about 2500 pounds an sits on a single axle trailer.

I think another reason is ti keep the leafsprings from "deforming" (sagging) too.

I do know that tires (stored weighted and unmoved for long periods) will dry rot when parked on concerate (I park on plywood for winter storage for my trailers and motorcycle).

Flat spotting a tire is relative to the load on it. If you are near your maximum rated load the problem will be worse. Also, traditionally anything with a nylon belted tire would flat spot quite badly. Newer tires are much better.

I actually just take one wheel off and hide it to prevent theft. You want my boat, bring your own **** wheel!

Re: Trailer and storage question

I store on the trailer outside for 6 months of the year and the temperatures will go down to -10f. I prefer to jack on stands take both wheels off. Will also place tongue on stand to avoid stress on front jack. Removing wheels and storing inside, helps to prevent theft as well as preserves the tires from flattening and more importantly UV damage. Also a good idea to repack berrings before winter, as ice water will crack hubs. Also, remove plug and raise bow higher than stern to ensure water drains from hull.

Re: Trailer and storage question

There is some validity in the "flat spot issue". Bought a new Maxima for the wife two years ago...for 12 months Nissan could not find the front end vibration problem. Finally found out two tires were flat spotted from sitting (maybe)for several months in cold climate. I've had same with boat and PWC trailer tires, but moor for the season so boat is in once and out once, and travel is only two miles. Many I know take weight off trailer tire for winter storage.
