Re: tragic start to le mans
Remember 1955? Well, if you weren't alive then, Pierre Levegh , driving a Mercedes 300SLR at 150 mph hit an Austin Healy pulling out of the pit. His car disintegrated, exploded and flew into the crowd. Various reports listed either 80 or 100 spectators killed and another 100 or so injured. He was avoiding a Jaguar when he hit the AH.
Neither Jag nor Mercedes raced at LeMans again for 30 years.
Today's event is sad and tragic, but racing is safer than it has ever been.
