Well the morning started with a body recovery about five miles out of town at a popular local swimming place. A couple people in canoes found the body; he had been in the river a few days.

There was another drowning in one of our local rivers a little while later.

And I ended my shift with another drowning, this one hit closer to home for me. This one occurred at the ramp I use all the time, I did not know this person but had seen him from time to time on the water.

He was loading his boat on the trailer and witnesses said he went into the water and dove under his boat to fasten a chain; I?m not sure what kind of chain he would have been securing under the boat. But he didn?t surface; he had been under for around ten minutes before the divers found him. We did our best and the Dr. along with the ER staff worked there hardest, unfortunately he didn?t survive.

Sad thing is his Wife along with there seven year old child was in the boat and witnessed all of this, and he was only two years older than I am.

Please keep the families in you?re thoughts.
Jeff.

Just goes to show you how quick things can happen.

Sorry to hear that...as a former lifeguard I can relate somewhat to being in that situation. Sounds like responders did what they could, sometimes still not enough:(

Sad situation. Was this in the Kanawha or the Coal river? I'm guessing you put in at the St.Albans ramp. We were gone this weekend and I didn't hear about these sad events until I read your post. My hopes and prayers go out to the families.

Hey Tom, the last one was on the Kanawha. Very sad indeed, worst yet is I later found out that it was the seven year olds birthday. A very horrible event that will be relived every year for the rest of that Childs life. No date would have been good but with it occurring on there birthday, they are assured not to forget it.

Sad in general and sad that it was on the child's birthday. The poor kid isn't going to be able to celebrate it for a very long time, without a lot of emotional baggage.

Seems like every week or two there is another report of a drowning on the Kanawha. Most, if not all, could have been prevented. Like Jeff said, that poor kid is going to relive his father's drowning every year on his birthday. Tragic.

Always plenty of people sticking around to tell what happened; Never anyone to actually save the guy! If your spouse was 5 feet under your feet.. would you just sit in apathy and watch him/her drown? There were other people at the launch to tell about it.. what were they doing? Taking pictures? Heck, there are news stories of people watching guys slowly die from gunshot wounds on the sidewalk.. without even calling for help, let alone actually rendering assistance. The tragedy is people dying in sight of others who might have saved them.
