Re: trade in value

Any dealer will offer something, based on their ability to discount the new boat already. Your trade-in is not a real trade-in to them. You are better off selling it privately or in separate sales of the boat, motor, and trailer. If you had a 1978 Ford Maverick, do you think a car dealer would give you something, or just discount the new car to make you feel better?

You can look at nadaguides.com but with a boat that age it is hard to put a value on it that is not based on condition of the vessel.

Re: trade in value

Any published trade in values will be irrelevant for the reasons WBC and Wifisher point out. I highly doubt that many dealers would be interested in your trade, it's basically worth nothing to them.

As a word of warning, the majority of boat owners VASTLY overestimate the value of their boats. Finding a similar boat on Craigslist and using this as a "guide" is meaningless because this is generally a fantasy price the seller hopes to achieve if they can find the right sucker willing to pay anything. The real sale price is much harder information to come by and it varies wildly by region and condition.

Your current old-style 2 stroke outboard is going to make this boat an increasingly difficult sale. Most buyers are now aware of how thirsty these old school 2 strokers are and with the price of fuel climbing on a daily basis, I suspect this will anchor your value on the low end.

Don't mean to sound negative, but I would have very limited expectations if I were you. Sell it privately and be realistic. If you aren't getting a lot calls, you're way too high.

If the boat is in nice condition, definitely sell it yourself.

Re: trade in value

I describe my own boat on Boattrader and see what other people are asking for comparable boats. Consider the highs and lows, and know your tolerance level. Time is money to me, so I price to sell. You have to start somewhere, it usually comes down to a comprimised price, so just know what your level of comfort is on the bottom side. I have bought both my boats used w/ less than 40 hrs, and always buy them in the fall when the owners have to weigh the price of another year of storage.

Don't trade it!
Whenever you trade a vehicle in not only are you paying the agreed upon price for the one your buying, YOU are also paying the price for the one your trading in. Dealers have to plan on not being able to sell your trade or unloading it for next to nothing, they don't bet on the come. So if they will give you 2K for your boat they will make that up somewhere else, so either way your paying.

Overall the adage that "your boat is worth exactly what someone will pay for it" always applies. Craiglist is about the only reasonble way to find a price range to start at. But before you go there you have to make the decison in your mind whether your trying to unload it or you would only sell it if you can get a certain price. For the right price everything I have is for sale. Once you make that decison search CL for a number of like boats in like condition and get a ball park figure. You can also watch those boats, if they are still on there several weeks later there probably priced to high.

Re: trade in value

Unless the boat has been completely renovated its probably without any real value .
But the engine and trailer are worth $2K.

I'd part the boat out and buy a newer hull.

Re: trade in value

I researched NADA and all the online classified type sites (boat trader, ebay, craigslist, local newspaper sites, etc) and determine what I would ask for boat if selling it outright. Then, I figured the selling price would be a little less than asking price and trade-in a little less than that. I've traded 2 boats in last 10 years and in both cases my thoughts on trade-in were very close to what dealer offered. I could have gotten more on outright sale but I hate the hassle of selling things like cars and boats.

I agree with Jones. The boat has no value, the trailer has a small value, if in good shape. Ditto for the motor.

Re: trade in value

Wanna know the true value (to a boat dealer) for your rig? Ask them to make you cash offer to purchase it, without you buying anything in return- this is usually the way to sell anything for the lowest possible price. Typically dealers will pay about 50% of what they think they can sell the rig for. If they refuse to make an offer, then trading it would be pointless unless you simply just want to get rid of it- assuming they'll take it, of course. They might make you an offer for trade, especially if you're buying a new rig from them, but they'd just be playing with numbers.

Re: trade in value

I would be real surprized if they buy it as suggested by Brewman. I went to a local boat dealer to buy a used engine. They had nothing under $3k, and acted insulted that I wanted something cheaper.

Re: trade in value

and when you go to sell it, always take the first offer!

If your boat is well maintained, you may have luck selling it word of mouth, at your local marina, etc.
