We have a 1974 17' Glastron tri-hull with a Johnson 150 V-6 outboard. We are looking at purchasing a new tow vechilce and need to have an idea of the combined tow weight of the boat trailer and motor. Does anyone have an estimate of the weight?

Re: Towing

Looking at the NADA weights, I find either 775 or 1000 for the boat, plus 384 for the outboard. Add 700 lb for the trailer and another 500 for gear and you're around 2500 lb for the whole package. You need a tow vehicle with at least a 3000 lb towing capacity here.

Re: Towing

Whatever make and model tow vehicle you get serious about, make sure you read the "towing restrictions and limits" very carefully. In most cases, people and luggage must be subtracted from that weight of whatever it is you are towing. If you buy a vehicle with a 3000# tow rating, four people @150# reduces that tow capacity to 2400#. While you might "get by" with a mini-van, you would be pressing the upper limits. Your going to be limited to something mid-size like Chevy TrailBlazer or Equinox (marginal), Ford Explorer or Escape (also marginal), or Dodge Dakota. The import SUVs and midsize pickups would also be good choices.
