I have a 24 foot pontoon on tandem trailer that I tow with an old 97 grand cherokee with the 4.0 six. I only go about 10 miles each way and it works ok. sometimes I use my 04 with the same motor, seems like less power. I'm replacing the 04 because it was totaled. I am looking at an 05 with the 3.7 v-6. this would only be used if the old jeep was down. anyone got any feedback on using the newer jeep with the smaller v-6? the boat and trailer I'm guessing around 3500 lbs.

well the 05 with the 3.7 has 210 hp with 235 ft lbs of torque vs the 4.o at 195 hp and 230 ft lbs of torque. so there is a plus... now onto the towing capacity 3500lbs so hmmm will be cutting it close.. if in doubt have the rig weighed..

The 3.7s were rated at just that, 3500 lbs. If your towing is all level ground and not high speeds it may be OK, but any hills and highway driving and you'll be better off with a V8. The 4.0 inline six has notably stronger low end torque than the 3.7 V6 despite the hp and torque ratings being close.

We have an '01 with a 4.7L V8. It has a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs. I'm pretty sure that the 4.0L version of ours was rated for 4,500.

Re: Towing with Jeep grand cherokee question

The 4.0 torque peaks at 3000 RPM and the 3.7 torque peaks at 4000 RPM. Guess which motor I want in front of me pulling a boat up a ramp, up a hill or in front of traffic? It's what I have, only in a Cherokee instead of a GC.
