I thought when I saw the picture the truck was 25 years old or more.

Salt will do that.

Check the bottom inside lip of your front door frames also. They generally will look just as bad as your hood striker does in short time. 5 years from now, all these new generation Silverados are going to be the next big rust buckets running all over the country....disappointing for me as I own one myself.

Gee, I thought after the fiasco with '74 to about '80 Chevys rusting through in 15 months, GM would have that solved. That's why I drive a Ford now. 1986 to '96 no rust, 1996 to '05 no rust.

Re: towing with GM truck BIG rust problem

Every brand of pickup that I have inspected in the last 7 years in Illinois rusts. I haven't seen that on the striker area, though. I'll watch out for that.
That part number is for the hood I assume (15037161)... well according to my Mitchell estimating system, that's not the part number anymore. So it's possible that the hood has be changed, or just the part number changed.

Just popped mine for fun. That part number in this photo is identical to the one on my 2003 Silverado. And mine also has a little bit of rust starting in the area, but nowhere near what this photo is showing. They don't last forever, do they?

I find that very unusual. All GM vehicles are ELPO'd (dipped in a rust proofing finish thats basically electroplated to the metal). I'm going home to check my truck.
