Bought a new 2005 Ford F 150 v-6 Short bed pickup on Friday.
Owner's manual says the bumper can pull 5000# with 500# tongue weight.
Question: My boat is a 16 foot John boat with 25 Merc. and a new trailer. Total weight about 1500# loaded. Do I need a frame mounted receiver hitch?
What say you.
I really thank you all for your help!
nomoe99

Well my Ranger V-6 said the bumber was for 350/3500Lbs. 1400 miles and the boat is right at 2400Lbs. No problems. Ford is know to have aframe under the bumper thats very strong.

Nomoe, as long as the bumper isn't so high it causes the trailer to act funny, that boat shouldn't be a problem to pull with the ball on the bumper.

Re: TOWING WITH BUMPER

As the guy said, the important factor here is the height of the bumper. YOu want your trailer to be close to level.

If you have a chance, take a look at an aftermarket or factory receiver hitch mounted on a vehicle. Then look at the way your heavy duty bumper is mounted on your truck. If it's anything like my vehicles (a pickup with a heavy duty bumper and two vehicles with factory installed receiver hitches), you'll find the bumper is attached in the same way as the receiver hitch- heavy duty steel parts mounted to the frame. When I looked at this, it looks to me the heavy duty bumper is essentially the same engineering/construction as if it were just a modified version of the hitch. That made me feel very comfortable with towing at the specifications printed on the bumper (similar to yours). Fortunately for me, the bumper's just about at the right height for my trailer. Good luck.

Wieght certainly isn't an issue. I think the bumber hitch is high for most trailer. You want to be close to level.

I like the reciever hitch because it lets turn tighter cirles. Comes in handy at some of launches or other tight areas.

Bumper hitches cant make sharp turns. I would never trust any bumper for pulling anything. I have seen them bend easily in the middle and even come off. The cost of a class III hitch is minimal compared to a lost load.
