Re: Towing with a Nitro

We had a 2011 Nitro Shock with the 4.0/5spd auto. It was a nice ride. We towed our jon boat with it quite often. Boat and trailer combo is probably about 800 to 900 lbs. maybe a little more. Never gave us any issues. However, with the short wheelbase on the Nitro, I wouldn't be comfortable towing anything close to the max rating. I will give the Nitro credit, it didn't have much body roll when cornering like some swb suvs. Another thing I remember about the Nitro was even with the tow package, ours didn't have a tow/haul mode. You can manually lock out od on the shifter though. What are you thinking about towing with the Nitro?

I plan to tow a 19 foot Starcraft Islander on a 1000 pound trailer. The whole package is probably around 3500 pounds. The trailer has its own brakes. The Nitro is outfitted a tow package with steering fluid cooler, extra tranny oil cooler and extra engine oil cooler. The package is made to haul up to 5600 pounds. I just want to find out if anybody did that sort of hauling with the nitro or its twin, the jeep liberty

Did the nitro get the liberty transmission also? Through various family and friends, I've lost track of the number of liberty transmissions that they have gone through. (none of those people own a liberty any more either...) In the jeep's defense, none of them died from towing specific issues, as none of them did any towing whatsoever. (have to love a vehicle that randomly decides to take itself out of park, often many minutes after removing the keys and walking away... Especially if you are parked on a mountainside in yellowstone!)

I don't know which transmission the liberty has ,but this is an automatic five speed transmission designed by mercedes benz.

It may be okay with 3500lbs as long as the trailer brakes are working right. Like I said, I never pulled anything that heavy with ours. My biggest concern would be the trans. Especially if towing in mountains. I definitely keep it out of od to keep it from shifting so much. Check the owners manual and see what it says about towing. I can't remember any specifics about the Nitro.

Snickers, that means it will cost 5 times as much when it burns out.

I pull about 2000 lbs with a 2010 liberty with 3.7 engine. It seems to do fine. It's not a speed demon on the highway, I stay about 60 mph. I have surge brakes on my trailer and that helps a lot.
