I posted earlier about whether or not a front wheel drive would make a good tow vehicle, and lots of responses came in--pro and con. We ended up getting an '02 Blazer 2WD with a 5300 Lb. tow Cap.. Now my question is this: The bumper has stamped on it "3500 Lb. tow Cap. and 350 Lb. tongue Wt.". My rig weighs 2400 Lb. and the tongue Wt. is less than 200 Lb.. Can't I just screw a ball into the hole on the bumper and start towing? Do I really have to go out and spend another $200.00, and if so why? Thanks for your input.

Re: Towing with a bumper

It could have an aftermarkert bumper on it (check to make sure undercar braces are there).<br /><br /> If it is stock yes you can tow with it. I find it is easier to back with a reese tvye hitch comparred to a bummper

No need to spend $200.00, as you can get a good hitch, comparable to a reese, for $100.00, and any one that is capable of towing and operating a boat should be capable of installing it. :D :D

You can tow with bumper, but trailer tongue height (to high in front = to low in back) needs to be looked at when hitched up, also back up must remember not to cut turns to hard or the trailer is going to make contact with bumper, could make a mess outta things, that why I like having a receiver, you can turn a little tighter when backing, and can easily adjust for tongue height using different rise or drop receiver, but if you trailer is faily level when hooked up then you'll be fine. One other reason I like a receiver, I can still open the lift hatch on my Explorer, when trailer is on bumper I can't it'll hit the winch post.

It will work fine, however! You increase the chance of busting up your bumper while backing up to hook up the trailer.A receiver hitch will give some extension and more margine for error. A hitch is cheaper than a bumper. It will also allow you to open the back gate unimpeded by the trailer and allow a little extra room for manuvering. The nose of the trailer may "ride high" instead of level (ideal). With a receiver you can drop the ball lower if needed. A receiver will also allow the use of other accessories such as bike racks and storage racks which come in handy for hauling things you don't want in the vehicle. Every one I have bought has been worth every penny paid.

The Blazer is an excellent towing choice...it will equal or outperform a 1/2 ton PU at the ramp. The O.E.M. bumber hitch is safe but not as convienent as a frame mount receiver hitch. I know because I have battle scars (cosmetic) on mine. As long as you have someone to help you back up to the hitch this is'nt an issue.

I have to agree with the last poster, the newer bumper hitches work very well. Just make sure you have a 2" ball that is the same size as your hitch( I have a freind that has a 1 7/8" ball that takes his freinds boat out in the fall and puts his freinds boat out in the fall. Bad Idea. two springs ago, he put this guys boat into the water and the trailer came off his hitch. Nothing bad happened, but it could have. Match up the numbers on the ball and the hitch. PDS

Re: Towing with a bumper

Had a Dakota midsize PU with a ball on the bumper. Towed around a 14 ft alluminum Lowe with with a 9.9 outboard. Boat, trailer, and gear came in less than 1300 all together and pulled with no problems. <br /><br />However, began hooking up to my utility trailer to pull my John Deere lawn tractor and after a while ended up with an oval hole and twist in the plate around the hole. Had the bumper removed and welded a large washer over top and bottom of hole to resume structural integrity. Welder indicated this was caused when breaking as all the weight of the trailer was transferred to the bumper mounted ball. <br /><br />You didn't indicate in the context of your post if your trailer rig includes brakes but it might not be a bad idea.<br /><br />BTW, traded in the Dakota last year for a new Chev Silverado Duramax Diesel with Allison 5 speed auto transmission for pulling the new rig I will be getting in the spring.<br /><br />Kevin

It's almost impossible not to ding up your bumper. I had an s-10 pick up with a ball on the bumper. On my next vehicle I got a used factory reciever hitch from ebay that mounted right to my truck and even had the wiring. It's an easy install because all of the holes are in place, just screw the bolts in. With shipping it was about $55. You never know when you will need to tow something heavier.

I am amazed at all the people that say you will dent up your bumper or tailgate. Don't you people have any patience? Always in a hurry? Whats up?<br /><br />I have an 87 vehicle that has been used for towing since day one, bumper hitch, no dents in bumper, rear door, or license plate.<br /><br />I may get to the lake 5 minutes after you, but my rig is in one piece, nothing is forgotten, my boat is ready for launching, and my rod is ready to cast as soon as I am 100 feet from the launch.

Give us a break Roscoe, do you have to function around an antsy wife, helpless son-in-law, 2 crazy dogs and 2 blondes?

I have a friend that is the service manager at both a Chevy and a Jeep dealership. They routinely throw away brand new factory hitches that people buying the new vehicles do not want. Check your local dealer....maybe there is a good deal waiting there.<br /><br />Mike

No Big Dee, just a short tempered high blood pressured girl friend, and her 2 kids; whos favorite line is "You're not my dad so shut up".<br />My response is ALWAYS "have fun at home today, I'll call you and tell you how the fishing was."<br /><br />Plain and simple I won't put up with their crup.<br />They are right, I'm not their dad, if I were, I'd be in jail for child abuse. Thank God they don't live with me.

Re: Towing with a bumper

You're fine to tow with the bumper on the rig you described. Some folks though brought up valid points to consider, but I wouldn't worry about dinging the bumper...as Rosoce points out, it's a matter of how much caution you excercise.<br /><br />Here's a point that I didn't see mentioned though, and it's partly a matter of preference...ball height and distance from vehicle. First the ball height changes the weight distribution such that when stopping, more weight is distributed toward the front wheels of the tow vehicle, in extreme cases the rear wheels can lift, but in keeping everything within reason you're going to be OK. FWD vs RWD or 4WD matters too.<br /><br />Second, ball distance from vehicle, plays a role in turning radius, but more importantly for me, impacts whether the tailgate on my vehicle can be opened while a trailer is hitched. This is important for access but more important backing up an empty trailer. I have one trailer (for Seadoo) that I can not see when it's empty unless the tailgate is down and the softcover removed because my 4X4 SuperCrew is pretty high off the ground.<br /><br />Last, if you have more than one trailer or regularly tow friends boats, snowmobiles and a variety of items it's much more convenient to slide the right size ball into the receiver. I like to have three. If you're within tow limits with bumper mount tow ball you're fine, after that it's a matter of preference and convenience.
