So I bought a second winter project as the lone star is wrapping up. As many of you may remember I popped on a sea ray 240 srv for 800$. Got trailer licensed. Checked the tires had slight dry rot but nothing too major. Pulled out of driveway and started towards home. This was where mr. Murphy visited me. Was watching driverside mirror and saw something tink in the roadway. Started to slow for light and saw one of my tires from the driverside go flying past across 4 lanes of traffic.

I managed to keep the trailer straight and up right. Pulled to side of road. The loose tire missed all the cars. The brake drum on the trailer was sitting all an inch off the road. The other tire on that side held under the extra load thankfully.

All this because I forgot to double check torque on the lugs. Everyone is safe which is what truely matters.

Re: towing winter project home

That almost happened to me many years ago when I was towing my new to me boat home. It was a good thing I stopped at a friends house before getting onto the highway. As I was pulling up to my friends house , I heard a cluncking noise as I parked the the trailer along side of a fence in front of my buddies house. I found all five of the lug nuts were loose on one side. You betcha I checked the other side as well...
I am glad you did not have a serious incident. I got a shiver when I thought of what may have happened if I had not stopped by my buddie's house that day before getting up to highway speeds....

Re: towing winter project home

Back in 1957 I bought my first car, a 1940 Chevy sedan for $15.00. The owner wanted the tires and wheels to keep for his other car and had some extra old tires and wheels to drive it home on. My buddy and I changed the tires around and I took it home. I was so proud of my new to me car and as soon as my dad came home from work I insisted he come with me on a test ride to show him what a good deal I got. We lived off a dirt road back then and about one mile up the road there is a big thump and I came to a stop. The right front tire was off and wedged under the fender. Here is when I found out my buddy only finger tightened the nuts on the side he was doing. To the day he died my father would tell me he never would forget the look on my face when the wheels came off my new car.

My buddy is now retired from his job as a design engineer for Caterpillar. I hope that over the years he learned to be a little more careful about his work.
