towing w a bronco II

help!a fishing buddy of mine bought an old 76 larson 16.5 foot tri-hull with a 4 cyl.mercruiser.He tows with an '84 BroncoII w/a v-6 and auto. trans.It keeps overheating on him and he insists that the boat is too heavy for the Bronco. I am convinced that there is sonmething wrong with his truck, but he doesn't listen.Now I've towed his boat with a full size Blazer and compared to my boat I would guess the weight of his to be about 2,000 lbs. Does that sound about right? He thinks he's towing too much. He doesn't have an owners manual.I know that those little Broncos were cockroaches but I dont think that he's overdoing it. What do you out there in boating land think? Thanks,tk.

Hi, TK.<br /><br />Your buddy is correct. VERY correct. I doubt that the bronco II is rated for over 1,000lb and I suspect the tow weighs over 2,000.<br /><br />Do not ride with him.

Bronco II should be able to pull that at a modest speed...sounds like he is pulling in od and should not be.. i would think he would need to add a tranny cooler, oil cooler and a beefier radiator to tow long distances.... <br />i would not want to pull a boat too far with that small of a vehicle anyway....Bronco II's are short, narrow, and top heavy...

There is something I don't understand here. <br /><br />Why wont people just find out what a vehicle is rated to tow?? It is so simple to do.<br /><br />Towing over the rated weight is very dangerous and very likely to damage the vehicle, assuming it isn't destroyed in an "accident" (read: "premeditated negligence") first. Not just your life, but the lives of others on the road are at stake.<br /><br />You can tow that boat with a riding lawnmower. Stop it? Control it? Retrieve it? Not likely.

Thanks, JB, I've been after him to find out what the towing capacity is, but I might as well beat my head against the wall!He is in the market for a full size truck now. He called me at 6 p.m last night and wanted me to drive him to Sonoma(2 hrs one way) to look at a truck. Ha Ha Ha I don't think so, dude, I gotta get up at 4:45 a.m. Shoulda called 2 or 3 hrs sooner! UPDATE: My buddy just stopped by with his "new" truck. An 87 GMC sierra classic 4x4. He got it for 4k. Its really a nice ride.That should do the job. tk
