I have a 2003 GMC Envoy SLE. I purchased it used with about 36,000 miles on it. It has a trailer hitch which appears factory installed. I have a 20'Wellcraft and a EZ Loader trailer. The Wellcraft has a 60 gallon tank and I estimate the total weight I'll be towing fully loaded to be about 4200#. I don't know what is included in the tow package other than the hitch. What else is included in a "tow package" and do I need it? How can I tell if I do have the tow package? GM says that the SLE has a 6100# towing capacity.

Re: Towing Questions

You have to find the RPO codes for your vehicle. I did a quick search and found these:

http://gm-trucks.com/home/content/view/53/30/

YMMV

Then find where the RPO codes are posted on your vehicle (glove box) and determine what axle ratio and such you have to determine tow rating.

Then look at this chart to see what combo you come up with. Vehicles with different options can vary widely -- it's not just engine.

http://www.trailerboats.com/images/elements/966709_2005TowRatings.pdf

Re: Towing Questions

It looks like in the 2005 model year it varies from 4700 to 5800 depending on 2/4WD or axle ratio for the I6 engine.

Depending on where and how far, you should be fine. If you did end up having the 3.42 axle ratio and needed some extra umph up the hills, you could put some slightly smaller diameter tires on to effectively change your axle ratio.
