i have a 1984 mercury 115 inline 6. the motor runs great, but after im on the throttle for about 5-10 seconds, the motor bogs down, and the ball feels very soft. at first i thought maybe it was a carb issue, but it runs perfect once you pump the ball back up. my next thought was possibly leaks somewhere in the fuel line or at the tank? or maybe a fuel pump issue? all suggestions are appreciated.

After running, even a perfect running engine will have a softened primer bulb, and this is normal. If you prime the bulb and the engine runs better, then you do have a problem. As you stated, first replace the fuel pump if it's more than a few years old. Next start looking for air leaks in the fuel line, or at the fuel line connections. Where you have swapped out fuel tanks already, and are still having the same issue, I kind of doubt the problem lies with the tank itself. I think I would also do a quick compression test on the motor. If the cylinder that drives the fuel pump has low or no compression, then no amount of tinkering with pumps etc. is gonna' fix this running issue. Good luck.

the compression is about 115 on all the cylinders. when i go to feel the ball as the engine bogs, it almost feels like theres no fuel in there. it seemed like the motor was sucking in air. how hard is it to replace the fuel pumps on these things? ive never really looked at it closely.

Fuel pump may be easily and cheeply rebuilt. Kits are a few $$. Check fuel line connections to tank, and check for tank venting properly.

today i took the boat out and before i left, i tightened all the hose clamps on the fuel lines. it made a big difference, but the motor still bogs during the wholeshot sometimes. it has to be a lack of fuel. since the hoseclamps helped, im gonna get a new ball too. i think the motor is sucking in air. where can i find a fuel pump online?

Before you spend any money on anything, you should advise if you paid attention to what Chris said," check for tank venting properly. " You would be surprised how much parts changing gets done and this simple item is overlooked.

the cap on my 6 gallon gas tanks have vents that are unclogged and free flowing.
