Truck is a 2001 Dodge 2500 4WD

Boat is a '80 BW Montauk, weighing roughly 2,000 pounds when ready for the road.(estimate)

We have towed many different trailers with this truck, some much heavier and some much lighter then the boat, the things we’ve pulled that where bigger then the boat we stayed out of O/ D, but the boat seems boarder line.

Anyone have any experience towing a similar size boat with 3/4 ton Dodge?

Hook up to the truck, put it in OD, set the cruise and go. You'll be fine. The truck should not know the boat is back there. If you get into hilly country and the transmission seems to hunt into and out of OD, pop it into D. I pull a heavier boat at freeway speeds in OD with my little S-10.

I towed that boat about 15,000 miles in OD with my MLs, Ryan.

I'm pretty sure your Dodge can handle it.

1. Get the boat and trailer weighed, full of fuel and loaded as it normally would be for trailering.

2. Check the truck's owner's manual for towing recomendations.

Get out the owners manual and read it.

Re: Tow this rig in OD?

My Ford F-150 SuperCrew pulled my 2ooo lbs or so of boat with no problems in some pretty hilly terrain yesterday in OD. Got me 12.7 mpg too at 75 mph cruise on most of the way. The boat before the tank and floor were installed weigh 1460 lbs I had it weighed. I will weigh it again but the trucks rated to 7700 at sea level and 7000 here at 5ooo ft. I did switch the O/D off on the hills going up just at the bottom so it would not rev to 3500 rpm. That 5.4L is the motor to have. 350 Ft/lbs of torque at 2500 rpm! The newer ones only have 365 ft/lbs and weigh about 1000 lbs more.

Re: Tow this rig in OD?

Ryan, I have a 2001 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins diesel. I tow two different boats and the lighter one weighs about 3200 lbs with boat, motor and trailer and all gear and I tow in OD all of the time when on interstates and now have 145000 miles on truck and no problems. When I am towing on rural highways or in town I turn off the OD so that the tranny is not searching for a gear or constantly shifting in and out of OD.
