Does anyone know if the lug nuts on my trailer need to be torqued when changing the wheels? Replacing both tires this spring in the driveway and need to know if I should invest (read: borrow) a torque wrench.<br /><br />If so, what should the tires be tourqued at?<br /><br />Boat is a 19.5 foot bayliner, with 3.0L engine.<br /><br />Thanks.

Same as your car, snug them up in a diagonally opposed pattern and tighten. No need for a torque wrench.<br /><br />You should see how a tire shop does it  <br /><br />Aldo

My guess is your trailer has steel rims, if so then the lug nut will be torqued to about 75 ft lbs, but if you don't have a Torque wrench then just be sure you tighten them evenly and to not over tighten. and check those lugs every trip.

Just remember, you want them tight, but over time they will tighen even further.<br /><br />There will come a day when you will be on the side of the road with your lug wrench trying to get it off.<br /><br />Don't use a big powerful wrench unless that is what you will have when you need it.

The lug bolts on my trailer have "torque to 90 ft lb" embossed on the heads.

Here in America, the land of the litigious, every tire store I know of here in my little corner of the world uses a torque wrench or "Torque Sticks."<br /><br />If you value your investments (ie boat, trailer, house) TORQUE your lugnuts. Unless you are skilled and your elbow clicks at a preset torque, you will NEVER get an even torque on the nuts.<br /><br />Find the spec and torque them. Please!

Lugs on my 21 foot tandem axel trailer with 14 inch by 7 inch galvanized wheels say 85 foot pounds, but I do not know how that converts to metric system.

Most quality torque wrenches are graduated in both ft lbs and Nm.
