The torque for the flywheel nut on most 40's is 105 ft/lb. On some early 40's, the torque spec. was 65 ft/lb. If your's has a 7/8 inch flywheel nut, then it's the lower torque. Otherwise, it's 105 ft/lb.

I have a 1961, 40 HP outboard and I torqued the flywheel nut at 105 ft/lb.
