Re: Torque and tightening follow order cylinder head bolts Johnson 5.5 HP ?
Wabbit,

You can usually re-use the head bolts. Clean the threads of the bolts and chase the threads in the block. Don't use anti-seize on the bolts, it throws off the torque figures by a wide margin.
Tightening sequence is usually done in a circular pattern, starting in the center of the pattern.

If these numbers represent the head bolts,

1 2 3
4 5 6

The sequence would be 2,5,4,1,3,6. I like to torque them to 50% of the final torque, then tighten again to 100% of final torque. After motor is run tested and cool , go back and re-check torque.

As for the torque force, here are the units you'll be most familiar with.

1 inch pound-force = 0.1129848 newton meter
10 inch pound-force = 1.1298483 newton meter
20 inch pound-force = 2.2596966 newton meter
30 inch pound-force = 3.3895449 newton meter
40 inch pound-force = 4.5193932 newton meter
50 inch pound-force = 5.6492415 newton meter

1 foot pound-force = 1.355818 newton meter
10 foot pound-force = 13.5581795 newton meter
20 foot pound-force = 27.116359 newton meter
30 foot pound-force = 40.6745386 newton meter
40 foot pound-force = 54.2327181 newton meter
50 foot pound-force = 67.7908976 newton meter
