Hi everyone,

I have the chance to buy a brand new (leftover) Monterey Montura 186ms. However, since it weighs 2800lbs, I am worried that with a 3.0 liter engine it won't be fast enough for my liking. It can't be test driven as it is winter right now. Does anyone have this boat and know the top speed.
Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks I think that it might end up being a bit too slow. Thanks for your input!

I think bondo is about right and if you load it up with people you may not even get on plane. From the model number and and weight I am guessing that it is a 19-20' boat. It is probably rated for 8 people or more. Add coolers, fuel and gear and you are looking at a lot more than 2800lbs.

What's fast enough for your liking? My guess is that this rig should run in the low 40's, but only if you prop it right. That might take some trial and error and need a prop guy to work with you.

When I grew up dad had a 14' woody with a 10HP OB. At wot I thought we were flying. My first boat had a 40 HP OB and it literally DID fly. When I bought my current 190 I/O with a 3.0 liter Mercruiser I couldn't believe the power this rig had. The prop is SS and it's custom pitched to give the max. We have had 8 people in the boat (4 adults and 4 teenagers) and with that load it will still jump out of the water. Pulling 2 tubers is a breeze.

I have 1 buddy that runs WOT all the time. To ride with him is a chore because the bouncing hurts my stomach.....LOL. Another buddy just traded in twin 454's because it wasn't fast enough.

You have to ask yourself, do you have the need for speed?, do you want to be faster than the others?, or do you want to have an enjoyable family outing?

I have a 22' aluminum Islander with a 140 hp 3.0 merc. Boat weighs about 2200+ lbs, with 3 adults and fishing gear, kicker motor and 25 gallons of fuel she does 34mpg by GPS at 4500+rpm. If your boat weighs in at 2800 lbs then my guess woud be 30-32 mph and probably less with 6 adults on board. Now I am not a go fast guy as I normally fishing Lake Erie in NW Ohio and on there about 22-24 mph is typical cruising speed or get beat to death.

Thanks for all the replies! I decided not to purchase that boat because it seems like it would be too slow especially because I want to load it up.
