I have a 86 Mariner 50hp w/pwr trim on a 17' BassTracker. It has a stock prop on it now, 10 3/8 x 15. The topend is around 23-25 MPH now @ 5700, light load. What prop will give me alittle better topend. I'm really not concerned with the hole shot. Will a 13 1/4 x 17 work?

Re: Top End ???

Usually a higher pitch might help? if Stock is 10.5 to 11, that is probably max. I would go maybe 11X16 and try it out.. But with Only a 50HP. you may Want to Repower sometime/ we sold a similiar 18' SunTracker w/ a 75hp. Yamaha.. In fact it had a 50 MERC, was ALMOST 9mph faster from 24mph to 31-32** Just a thought, If you had the $5200. To spend on New Yama>> BD

Re: Top End ???

Believe me I'd love to go to an 80. The boat is rated for an 80 max. hp. But trying to get alittle more out of this 50 is the best I can do now. When you say max, do you mean diameter wise?

Re: Top End ???

Don't worry about diameter unless you are willing to raise the engine on the transom.
You have the small gearcase, 13 spline shaft...these props are a bit tuff to come by when looking for high-end performance.
Is the engine mounted at it's lowest position?(directly ON the transom).
Do you have the flat-bottom hull or semi-V??

The motor is mounted at it's lowest part of the transom. The Tx-17 BassTracker is a semi "V"

Re: Top End ???

OK, I'd say let's go with a good quality SS in a 15 pitch and raise the engine one hole. this should put you back close to 5600-5700. if it trims out slightly (mid-range) with no venting, raise the engine one more hole and test.
Make sure and re-seal the bolts when you reinstall them.
If you don't want to go with SS, get the 17 aluminum and raise the engine a hole at a time and test, just raise it enough you have no venting, but can keep max RPM at or above 5500.

Re: Top End ???

You're talking totally different props. A 15p on that smaller gearcase is for extremely light boats. Most run in the 11 to 14 range with 12 being the most popular. The 17 you descrbe is for larger gearcases and will not fit on yours. 15 is the steepest prop you can get for that motor that I am aware of. They don't make a 17 that fits that gearcase. I really can't imagine a 15 turning much over 4500RPMs on that boat with a 50Hp. Are you certain the tachometer is accurate? There are multiple settings on most tachs. I think yours is on the wrong one. Confirm WOT RPMs before going much further. I think you're operating on bad information from your tach.

On the side, there is no such thing as a stock prop on much of anything over 25Hp. They come without a prop and it's up to the selling dealer to fit the right prop based on what the motor is mounted to.

16 and 17 pitch are both available for that application in aluminum, and a few SS varieties.
Most are a standard 10"....typical of a higher pitch prop in the same blade design.

Re: Top End ???

13 1/4 x 17 that he mentions up top won't fit any 50Hp short of a Bigfoot and I don't think they made those in the mid 80s. I'm also wondering if it's even a Mariner. Tracker was owned by OMC around then and they were fitted with Johnsons. When Brunswick bought them, they were typically fitted with Forces. In Either case, they were fitted by the factory with close to max Hp whatever the brand. Of course that doesn't mean somebody didn't hang something else on there somewhere along the way, or that some dealer didn't play Musical Motors to make a sale. And Brunswick probably did fit them with Mariners before they bought Force. That would be a Yamaha-made 2-cylinder Mariner? Or a 4-cylinder Mercury-made "Classic Fifty" (45Hp)? I suppose it could be a Merc-made triple, but I've only seen one. The 60 and 70 triples are far more common.

I can't believe that motor is achieving anywhere near 5700 with a 15. The tach has to be on the wrong setting. It probably has a terrible holeshot and he may even need somebody to climb up to the bow to get it to plane off at all.

So in answer to his first question, that 17 won't fit his motor. Believe it or not I believe he needs to drop pitch to achieve max RPMs and Max Hp. A lower pitch may just get more speed out of that boat because the closer you get to max RPM, the more power is produced. Regardless, I doubt a 50 would get a riveted 17' V much over 30mph in the best of configurations.

Re: Top End ???

My friend has a 1989 TX17 with a 70hp Evinrude turning a 19p prop and with just him and a light load the boat will hit 42mph. With him and me withe a bit more gear it will hit 36-37mph, and still has a great hole shot.

Re: Top End ???

I never gave the RPM a thought because I also own a 17 Tracker, but it's a semi-flat-bottom. It came with a 40HP merc, same gearcase as his, and would swing a 14 pitch about 5500 @ 3500ft altitude.
We put a merc 3 cyl. 70 on it later (same gearcase) and used a 15 pitch at 6200RPM...I don't think he is too far off on the tach.

Re: Top End ???

Thanks for the replies. The Tach. has been a concern since I bought the boat. I have a new Tach on order. After installing that and getting a good reading, I'll get back to the forum. Again thanks for all the input.
tomsfishn
